A journalist’s quest to understand how teaching makes us human
In 2010, Antonio Battro, inspired by conversations with Sidney Strauss, challenged the field of Mind, Brain and Education to investigate teaching in its own right. That call to action persuaded me that I'd discovered a fundamental story that has never been told for a lay audience. I spent the last year with the Knight Science Journalism Fellowship at MIT pursuing the story of teaching, which is unfolding in a variety of disciplines. My synthesis of that research shows that teaching is more than a cognitive ability, it's an evolved social bond that defines our humanity.
